Umid Gojayev: Turkmenistan

In 2012, five men argued over access to a well.  In the midst of the fray, Umid hit one of the men in the head with a brick.  The man filed a complaint with the police.  A couple of days later, the two men reconciled, and Umid paid for his neighbors medical bills.  The man dropped the complaint against Umid, however the police refused to drop the charges.  He was sentenced to four years in prison for “hooliganism”, although none of the other men involved in the fracas were charged.  According to one of the investigators in the case, it is Umid’s position as a Christian that prompted the courts to press the charges against him.  In the two years he has been incarcerated, there have been four amnesties given to other prisoners who were convicted of the same charges, however Umid remains in prison while they have been released.  Umid’s wife is having a hard time providing for her children while her husband remains in prison.

What you can do:

  • Pray for Umid and his family.
  • Pray for the neighbors involved in the dispute.
  • Pray for the police and the courts of Turkmeniston.

Father,  It’s so hard to hear of people who are imprisoned because of their religious beliefs.  We lift up Umid to You, and ask that You would greatly bless his time in prison.  Make him a light in the darkness, a friend to the friendless.  Encourage him, support him, and provide for all his needs.  Release him from fear and grant him peace.  Open up the hearts and minds of those around him, and speak to them through him.  I pray for his wife and children.  Provide for them, and keep them safe.  Deliver them from evil.  Release them from shame, and fill them with Your own joy and peace.
