Two men on a motorcycle got Pastor “James” and his wife out of bed one evening recently, when they knocked on his door and asked him to help them repair their motorcycle. As “James” was looking at the bike, he heard the men talking to his wife. After asking her for her name, they shot her twice at point-blank range. This family was the only Christian family in the village. “James” and his two teenaged daughters have been moved to another location where they are being helped by Voice of the Martyrs.

What you can do:
- Pray for “James” and his 2 daughters.
- Pray for the men who attacked his wife.
- Pray for the government and the people of Columbia.
Father, it seems like the attacks on Your people are constant, and yet wherever the persecution is harshest, more and more people are turning to You. I thank You for the strength of Your people, for their patience, endurance, perseverance, and faith. I ask You to pour out Your mercy and grace on “James” and his children as they deal with this irrational and horrific event. You are the only One who can bring good out of evil, and I ask you to flood the hearts and minds of this family with good, which is the only thing that can overcome evil. I pray for the men who caused this death–I ask You to convict them, torment them, as You pour out Your Spirit within them, to bring them out of darkness into the kingdom of love. In Your kindness, lead them to repentance, and transform them into the image of Jesus. Embrace Columbia, Lord, which is so torn apart by drug wars. Give wisdom to the leaders of the country and lead them to a solution. Bring peace to the people, and the true liberty of Your Spirit.
Two years ago Hernan’s father was murdered by rebel groups in Columbia. Earlier this year his mother was killed by the same group. Hernan and his siblings are now orphans. You can write to them to encourage them. Won’t you take a few minutes to support the children of two martyrs? And pray for them as they adjust, yet again, to a new life without either of their parents.
What you can do:
Dear Father of Hernan,
Pour Your Spirit into the lives of these children who have lost both of their parents in horrible ways. Children need parents, and You’ve said that You are the Father of the fatherless. Be the Mother of the motherless, too, Lord. Provide for their basic needs. Give them the schooling they need to become contributing adults. Flood their lives with the love they need to grow emotionally healthy. Teach them the spiritual principles they need to grow in Your knowledge and grace. Be an active, living presence within them, and lead them to a firm foundation in Jesus. Pour out Your grace upon those who are caring for them. Grow them together into a new family in You. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Christian farmer, Jaime Tenorio, his wife, and their four children, were imprisoned in their home in September 2010, when local tribal council leaders wrapped it in barbed wire. Their farm and land were confiscated by the council, and Tenorio was sentenced to 20 years in prison, for his opposition to ancestral beliefs that are contrary to his Christian beliefs. Nineteen Christian families were also held under similar house arrest, and evicted from their lands.
Human rights organizations like Open Doors have reported these abuses to the Colombian government, but tribal authorities deny the charges when the state tries to investigate. They claim that when native people renounce their ancestral faith, they forfeit their very identity. Native councils are in complete control of tribal affairs, and so they are not accountable to the Colombian government. This leaves tribal Christians without help. It is common for Christians to be expelled from their lands, to have their homes, livestock, and crops seized, to be denied employment, education, and medical treatment, and to be excluded from all benefits given by the government to indigenous peoples.
Jaime’s sons now live in a children’s home (run by Open Doors) while their father is in prison. 35 Christian homes have been destroyed by fire, and 73 Christian teachers have been denied pay for refusing to teach students about tribal witchcraft and sorcery.

Please protect and defend Your children whom the state has failed to protect. So many families have been devastated, losing their homes and livelihoods, while choosing to follow You. Supply all their needs. Enable them to establish a new community of Christian families that will be a light in the darkness. Work on their behalf with the government officials to provide a way for their escape from these impossible conditions. Strengthen those who have been imprisoned and sentenced to outrageous terms, comfort those whose loved ones have been killed, and provide for the 100 families who have been expelled from their homes and lands. Show us what we can do to help them through this terrible time. Let Your presence be strong within each person affected by this situation. Empower them to love their enemies and show that love in unique and powerful ways. Soften the hearts of the tribal council members, and work on behalf of Your children. Lord, You are mighty to save! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
