Luke Somers, an American photojournalist, and Pierre Korkie, a South African teacher, were killed during a joint operation between the Yemen military and the United States special forces, who attempted to rescue the men held in Yemen by Al Qaida. Terrorists threatened to kill Somers on Saturday, December 6, 2014, and President Obama ordered the operation to rescue him. It was the second attempt by the US to remove the American from his captors in the last two weeks. The rescue group was within 100 meters of the compound when the terrorists spotted them. It’s believed they shot the two men before special forces arrived. All the terrorists in the compound were killed, and Somers and Korkie, hurt but alive, were removed. Doctors operated on them as they were flown to a navy ship in the area, the USS Makin. It is believed that Korkie died during the flight, and Somers died after arriving at the ship.
Luke was kidnapped outside of a grocery store in September 2013. Credible reports of his coming execution prompted President Obama to authorize his rescue, and the rescue of any other prisoners who were being held with him.
Pierre was arrested, along with his wife, in May of 2013. His wife’s release was negotiated by the group, Gift of the Givers. A group currently negotiating for Pierre’s release was told that he would be set free today, December 6, 2014, but the rescue attempt ended his life before that could happen.

What you can do:
- Please pray for the families of these men, as they face this tragedy.
- Pray for the people of Yemen.
- Be grateful for the help of the Yemeni government.
Father, I lift up the families of these two men to You today. I ask You to comfort them, support them, and heal them of their grief. I thank You for the cooperation of the Yemeni government in offering their intelligence information and working together in the military operation to secure the release of these two men. I ask You to bless everyone who did all they could to set Luke and Pierre free. Pour out Your mercy and grace on Yolande Korkie, who was expecting to welcome her husband home today. I can’t imagine how difficult this must be for her, and I ask You to give her abundant grace to deal with this huge tragedy. I pray, too, for their captors. Show them the truth. Turn them from their violent ways, and change their hearts and minds. For the glory of Jesus, Lord of All.
